In the spring and early summer, a warm surface layer is formed that does not mix with the cold bottom layer below, which means Echo Lake is a stratified lake. The temperature differences affect the phytoplankton and oxygen levels, and therefore the fish population. Colder water at the bottom of the lake is more conducive to cold-water fish. Unstratified lakes are not able to sustain cold-water fish populations.
